Golf tournamemt chairman named sportsperson of the year
Dave Matthews was front and centre when it came to the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club hosting the 2009 Canadian Tour Championship. He was there early in the year to defend the course when one pro suggested the Canadian Tour pros would scorch par on the layout. He was there at the start of the event to put a personal touch on the charity component of the event, deciding to go public with his fight against cancer to help promote fundraising efforts for the Walker Family Cancer Centre.
He was at the course 50-60 hours during the week of the tournament to make sure things ran smoothly and he was there at the end to present the trophy to winner James Love.
Sadly, less than a week later, the Truro, N.S., native died of cancer. ...
