(June 23, 2012 - Edmonton, AB) - Joe Panzeri shot a one-over 72 Saturday afternoon to keep a one-shot lead over Dodge Kemmer and Matt Marshall heading into the final round of the 2012 ATB Financial Classic presented by TELUS.
Panzeri led by five coming into the day, but was unable to follow up the magic of Friday's record-setting round. Still, the 25-year old is optimistic about his chances to win on Sunday.
"Today I didn't have my best but I hung in there and grinded it out," said Panzeri. "I kept it respectable and put myself in good position for tomorrow."
Panzeri won International Rookie of the Year honours in 2011, thanks in large part to a breakthrough win at the Dakota Dunes Casino Open. The Meridian, ID native says he'll try to draw from those experiences in the final round tomorrow.
"I've been there going into the last round with the lead before, and I feel good about my game," said Panzeri. "This is what we practice for and grind it out for - to be in the last group on Sunday."
Trailing by just a shot are Kemmer and Marshall, who matched Panzeri's course record from the day before with his own nine-under 62. Marshall birdied his first four holes and had a chance to set a new record before narrowly missing a birdie putt on the final hole.
"I've been struggling to make putts the last few days, but today they just seemed to go in," said Marshall, who shot rounds of 69 and 71 to open. "I also hit it a little closer, which always helps."
2011 California Q-School medalist Dodge Kemmer, who fired a four-under 67, is also 11-under. Just one shot further back is a group of five players including James Love (67), Michael Gligic (68), James Allenby (63), Scott Harrington (69) and Garret Sapp (66).
Windermere Golf & Country Club member Steven Lecuyer posted a three-under 68 to reach nine-under par alongside Matt Hill (65), Darren Wallace (69) and Ryan Williams (70).
18-year old Edmonton native Wilson Bateman holed his approach on the par-5 fourth for an eagle on the way to a six-under 65. Other notable rounds included 65 from Chris Cunningham and 69 from defending champion Hugo Leon. All three players sit at seven-under for the tournament.
Tee times for Sunday's round start at 8:00 AM and conclude at 10:00 AM, with players going in threesomes off both tees.
