GILLESPIE GRABS WIN AT SEAFORTH COUNTRY CLASSIC
Sunday, July 29, 2012 - Submitted by Brian Decker

(July 28, 2012 - Seaforth, ON) - Canadian Tour member Derek Gillespie claimed the 2012 Seaforth Country Classic Saturday, shooting a final round 62 and winning by four over WIll Mitchell.

Gillespie, who shot 19-under for the 54-hole event, earned $10,000 for the win, his second pro victory of the year after claiming a Great Lakes Tour event this spring.

"It's great to get a win any time you play," said Gillespie, a two-time Canadian Tour winner. "I'm really proud of the way I finished the tournament."

Starting the day tied with Canadian Tour veteran Brian Unk, who won the tournament as a CANTOUR event last year, Gillespie fell behind early but came roaring back with birdies at 10 and 11 and an eagle at the par-5 14th to take the lead for good.

"I knew I had to get in gear if I was going to win," said Gillespie, who was overcame the disappointment of not playing in the RBC Canadian Open this week.

"I really would have liked to be playing the Open this week, but to play the way I did and get a win is a great feeling," said Gillespie.

The victory is part of a continuing comeback for Gillespie. who last year suffered five broken ribs, a punctured lung and broken femur in a car accident. The 34-year old from Oshawa, ON has two top-10s on the Canadian Tour this season and sits 10th on the Order of Merit.

Though a number of Canadian Tour players teed it up at the event, the Seaforth Country Classic is a non-sanctioned open tournament this year.

Unk started with a first-round 61 and finished in third place. He started the day tied with Gillespie and birdied his first two holes before Gillespie pulled away.

"Brian's won here before and has such a deadly wedge game, I knew I had to get things going if I was going to win the tournament," said Gillespie.
